The President's Address to American Students: Your chance to talk back!

While the president's speech lacked any of the controversy that many had expected, it did raise some important questions that I think deserve a closer look.

In the days leading up to President Obama's speech, there was a lot of talk about schools or classes boycotting the speech, about parents refusing to allow their children to view the speech, and even of kid's themselves choosing to "opt-out." As a history teacher I began to worry, "Is this kind of reaction good for our democracy?" I, of course, believe that dissent is healthy in our kind of system. People should speak up when they disagree with our political leaders. Not only is this a fundamental right, but our civic duty to do so. What do you think about this? Should students be exposed to views from all sides? Why?

Having now watched the speech, and given its straight forward message, what do you think about it? Do you think that the president was right to avoid discussing any of the big political issues of the day?

I talked with a few 8th grade students after they viewed the speech in class, and they thought that it was the same kind of message that they hear from their teachers and parents all of the time - stay in school, work hard , and so on. If that is true, then does that kind of message have a bigger impact on students when they hear it from someone like the president? If so, why?

Finally, I think it is worth comparing the president's speech to those of some of his predecessors. Watch the speeches of Presidents Reagan and Bush (the 1st President Bush) provided below. How are they different or similar to President Obama's in style and substance? Who's is most powerful? Which do you think had a bigger impact on students when they were delivered? Do you think that speeches like this are worth a president time to prepare or deliver?

I look forward to your comments.

I like the idea of people speaking out to their political leaders. That freedom of speech right was a good idea - not everbody is going to agree on the same thing. And that brings us to another topic - Should students be exposed to all sides of the political world. I think so, because when they grow up, they might start to disagree with some things about their side. They might want to have prior knowledge of what other people think so they can get an idea of what they could believe.

Overall I thought Obama's speech was pretty good. I do think Obama should have discussed some of the big issues in the news because we're all citizens of the U.S. and we need to see what our president says about them. Sure, we can watch the news and read newspapers, but those are aimed for adults, and it would have been nice to see someone like the president address all these issues to students like us.

When students hear Obama or any president telling them to do something, they might take it more seriously than if someone else told you. For instance, when your mom tells you to clean your room, you may not really want to. When the president tells you to, you’re not just going to sit back on the couch and cross your arms while complaining – you’re going to clean your room well. This probably explains why students need to hear things like “work hard and do well in school” from the president.

Well, I couldn't see Reagan's speech on my computer, but I was able to see Bush’s speech. They were pretty similar and had that same message: work hard and do well in school. Obama’s speech was in a high school gym with probably hundreds of students and teachers, while Bush’s speech was in a single classroom. I think that’s why Obama’s speech might have been a tad bit more effective – when students see a lucky group of kids who get to see the president in person, they get jealous and might decide they don’t want to listen to the speech. By seeing a large group of students, they might be a little more attentive. Either way, a message from the president to all the kids in America is definitely worth their time because it shows kids that the president cares about everyone – not just adults.

I think that Obama was put in a tight spot and every expects to much of him. I believe he is doing his best to make it all better so, in a way I support him.

If they don`t want their kids to watch then that is their problem and i`m not going to force I just think if they have the time they should watch it. I don`t really think this is a good reaction on the republic.

I think that when a person they should stand up and "fight" for their ideas.

From my point-of-view i think that Obama did a great speach and got the general message across: Stay in school and do well, our [U.s.] future depends on you.

Like Nathan said, I think students should be exsposed to both sides of the government but not forced to watch a speech. my reasoning behind this is that one day students will get the right to vote and when that day comes they should be educated on both sides of the governments campaign and not just vote on a candidate based on who their mom or dad voted on.

I think that Obama's speech was very persuasive and I have no idea why parents don't want their kids to watch it. Who doesn't want their kids to stay in school? I think it was a really great speech. I watched the news and one parent said that he didn't want his child to be "controlled by the president". I think that the President telling the students to stay in school is more effective than your parents telling you.

Unknown said...

This is Maggie everyone. Read what I say because I want you to.

Personally I don't think it was necessary for parents to take their kids out of class because they didn't support Obama. Just because some parent wants to give the president a black eye doesn't mean that their child wants to give the president a kiss on the cheek. Parents should let their children be able to decide for themselves, especially at our age.

I think you should listen to both sides of an election. Let's say the next presidential election is between a monkey and a zebra. The monkey's speech is about lowering banana prices, and the zebra's speech is about creating more farms in America. You should listen to both sides because you might really like bananas and think that farms are so-so. If you only listened to the zebra's speech and went for him, that would be a pretty dumb choice because you probably would have really wanted to go for the monkey because you are a HUGE fan for bananas.

Okay so the question asking about avoiding big political issues thing...I'm really glad Obama didn't start talking about "Oh, our economy is on the suck-ish side right now" or "Health care reforms..blah blah blah" because I mean truthfully, I honestly don't care about our economy and stuff right now. I'm sure I will later when I grow up and stuff, but right now,it's not really like...interesting.

His speech about if you drop out of school you will fail your country...that was all very nice and well done, but I'd prefer it if future presidential speeches were shorter. Obama's speech about working hard in school really is the same speech that your teachers and parents give you. I listened to his speech closely and everything, but it didn't have any impact on me. I guess it's because I don't know him. Obama might have just lied and made this whole thing up you know? If it was someone I knew and trusted, giving that speech,I think it would have made a bigger impact on me. (Because I know they aren't lying about this)

This is all I'm going to say for now. For now.

I think that Obama did a good job of addressing us as kids.

One of the things that stood out in my mind is that he encouraged us to get involed in things like clubs, sports and other things. Obama also said that we as kids need to give back to our government or our country. I liked how both devin and nathan said that we should be exposed to both sides of the government, and not just what we hear our parents say about him.

Another thing that stood out of the speech is that he said it is very important to stay in school so that we can get the jobs that we want and go to the college that you want to go to in the future.

I do think that the speech was a good idea, it shows that he cares.

Nathan said...

I have a question for Maggie:

You say that the speech didn't have much impact on you because you don't personally know Obama. But shouldn't the authority that he has balance out the fact that you don't know him?

If you don't get what I'm saying, let me explain. If someone you don't know tells you something, sure it might not have much impact on you. But if it is someone with as much authority as the president, it might make a difference. Take that example I gave, for instance, where I was saying that you might refuse to clean your room for your mom, but you wouldn't do that for the president.

I'm just saying that maybe the president's speech did influence you a little, you may just have dig a little further to realize it.

Unknown said...

Nathan, I still don't think President Obama's speech had any impact on me.

Sincerely,
Maggie

Unknown said...

I think that students should be exposed to views from both sides because pretty soon all of us students will be able to vote and we should know more about each side before we pick who to vote for and not just vote for the same person as your friend just because he/she is voting for that person.

The message that the president is trying to tell us is just like the one our teachers and parents are telling us, do your homework and do your best in school. I think that this message may not have that much of a big impact on students if they have already heard it from their parents and teachers since they are already used to hearing all of this.

I think that Obama's speech had a bigger impact on students since he was more firm and convincing with his speech. The words that he used in his speech really made his speech very powerful to us students. I think that speeches like this are worth taking time for because they can make a big impact on our country and its people in a good and helpful way.

I don't think keeping your children from seeing the speech is the right thing to do. Just because you don't like the president at the time, doesn't mean your children aren't allowed to like them. I believe kids should be exposed to all sides of the political world. I agree with Maggie. If you don't listen to the Zebra and the Monkey, you might make a wrong decision when voting. Even though children aren't allowed to vote yet, they should pay attention now so they know what to do when they can vote. And, I personally think politics are cool.

I thought the speech was inspiring. It was a good idea to speak to the children. I think the speech got all the basics. Stay in school, keep trying, get good grades, and so on. I think it would have been good if the President quickly went through a summary of the most important political issues, and what he plans to do about it. Basically all I'm trying to say is that president Obama did a good job.

I agree with Nathan, the president saying to work hard and stay in school did make it sound more important to do. since the president is so important, what he says sounds more important. I mean I'm not saying that the parent and teachers are not important, its just they are not the president. I no that didn't really make much sense, but its the best I could do.

I think all of the speeches were said to get out the same messages. Stay in school, keep trying, get good grades, and so on. I thought all the speeches were said well. They all sounded a lot alike to me. I think all the messages were worth there time to deliver.

Unknown said...

Well I guess I should say hello, on my view of the president I really think he made his point, and i like the way Brendon said that really all Obama is saying is to stay in school because really we are the future. Alot of kids who have already blogged have said some knowledgeable things and it's kinda difficult to find anything else to say, but I absolutely like what Maggie said in her first paragraph, about kids our age being able to make are own decisions, not voting though because were not old enough for that. Lastly what i'm going to say is that I truly admire how President Obama got out to tell students to learn from your mistakes and stay in school, because thats exactly all he was trying to address us students.

Megan Ramba said...

I fell Obama's speech is lacked originality, to me it sounds like every other Presidential speech to children. I believe that he thought this was important because of his kids. I think parents and their kids have a right on whether they want to watch it or not. But I do believe he has done a good job as a President to adress us kids and future voters.

I agree with Jackie when she said that children should be allowed to listen to the speech even if their parents don't like the president. This is important to us since we students will need to start listening to whatever is happening around us in the political world so we can make good decisions when we eventually get to vote. I heard that at some schools they had given out permission slips to see if any students are not allowed to watch the speech and I think that is unnecessary since this speech would be helpful to pretty much all students.

Obama's speech had a big impact on me. I liked how he talked to the kids about his childhood. When he was talking about that kids should jion some clubs I think that Yes the speech may have been boring to some people but it was a good thing for people to listen to the president talk about what we can do to make a better choice as kids.

Tyler said...

The fist thing i am gonna say is that that video took a long time but i got a lot from it.

When Obama said that speech, I remembered what Mr. Veliz said in class, "No one can agree on the same thing, there are too many people out there with totally different ideas about what they think." I liked the part when Obama said that he wanted kids to get involved in clubs and sports. I agree with him in that situation and when he said that we are the future (the kids) so we need to get involved in the government and know what is going on in the country.

I agree with what maggie said about you should listen to both sides of what the presidents have to say. Like she said if you only listen to one and you agree with that one and vote for him/her, then after the election you hear what the other person running for president had to say and you liked what he had to say better you can't change your vote so that is why i think you should listen to what everyone has to say, and then you can make your vote.

This is only what I think and i think it is right and I understand if you don't agree with me because everyone has a different belief or way of thinking. In this speech he didn't go too deep about things so I won't say anything that I disagree on because it wasn't in the video.

Jackie said...

I do not think it was a good idea to send out peermission slips. The parents should not care if there kids watch the president. I hope everyone was allowed to watch it!!!

Kristin said...

I, personally, thought that everything in Obama's speech was stuff we already knew. Work hard in school! Uh... duh. Cover your mouth when you cough! Didn't we learn that in kindergarten? Yeah he's the President of the United States. I'll give him respect for that. But he isn't my mom and he isn't my dad. If he told me to clean my room when I got home, I wouldn't. Not until my mother or father told me to. I have alot more respect for my parents then someone I've never met before.

As for discussing political issues in his speech, I think he should have. Though I'm not at all surprised that he didn't. We are all American citizens (even if we are twelve years old) and we deserve to know where our country is headed. And yes, students should see all political views. That way when they get older they know more about what to look for when they are voting for a new President.

Jessie said...

I agree with Kristin about some of the things Obama said about staying in school and covering your mouth when you cough, we already know that. I did like though how he went into farther detail about staying in school and giving examples about his childhood. I think all parents should have let there child watch the speech whether they are for Obama or not, every kid needs reassurance to stay in school and why they should stay in school.

I really liked how he gave examples of kids who had it harder than most of us, and how they managed to stay in school and keep up with their homework. Now those people like Jasmine are going to college and probably going to have a great future and job.

This speech was aimed at kids more than adults and I liked how he took time to talk to us about that. Like Nathan, overall I think he did a good job on the speech and addressing it to the kids of our countries future.

I agree with Maggie, and i disagree with Nathen, Authority doesent matter, i have made many foolish statments but this isnt once of them,

would you agree if the same speech came from hitler, Mr.stalin or another dictator that made many speeches to increase their sphere of influence.

All authority is is a false sense of accomplishment

instead listen to your comrades, but still listen to the cops, doctors and Paramedics.

if you listen to people just cause of their authority than your (pardon my french)a fool.

Nathan said...

I disagree with Robert. I respect that comment where he said "Would you agree if the same speech came from Hitler, Mr. Stalin or another dictator that made many speeches to increase their sphere of influence?"

But my response to that is - I wouldn't agree, but I don't have to. This is America - a free country, with a president who isn't elected to become dictator and expect every citizen to do what he or she says. In the U.S., we can disagree with the president, and not get killed like we would with Castro.

As for his comment about if you listen to people just cause of their authority then you're a fool, I highly do not agree with that.

Take that part we're learning about in our textbooks and in class for instance. The people of Jamestown were helpless when their leader went back to Britian. They were fools to NOT listen to authority. There are many other examples like this where people were absolutely not fools to listen to people with authority.

Forgive me if I make a few typos, I'm on the internet on my Wii because my regular computer is down... sorry...

Okay, so back to the presiden's speech. I think that everyone should be able to express their own opinion. Students should be exposed to to all views because they are able to conceive new ideas from others. They are able to evaluate the thoughts and draw their own conclusions.

Personally I thought the speech was VERY good. I think the President chose good topics. It was good to hear a role model, such as the President, give advice/tips on how to make the most out of school.

I think it was right of him not to discuss the political issues because the kids listening could start to zone out and forget the whole message (basically, I also agree with Maggie because those political topics practically put me to sleep).

I think the President, rather than the teacher, will have more of an impact on students because everyone hears about the president and they respect him (currently) because of his office (not to mention the previous presidents). I'm not saying that he's more respectable than teachers (chiming in again what Maggie has said) but he's just a LITTLE bit more powerful than teachers -mostly brcause he could blow up the world...- but no biggie.

I also couldn't bring up Reagan's speech, but I could bring up the elder George Bush and although the obvious size difference of the classroom vs. auditorium, I didn't notice much of a difference. The main message was stay in school, don't get in fights- the kind of thing any loving parent/role model would say.

Sorry it looks like I turned it in so late, I really started like 2 hours ago but I had to try to remenber the questions and stuff! At this rate, I really NEVER want to see my Wii again!!!

thanks for reading!

I think that Obama did a great job of delivering the speech and I think the speech was very persuasive. I have no idea why parents wouldn't want their child(ren) to watch this speech. I don't think the parents should control what their children think. I believe that children should be exposed to both the democratic and republican party. I think that obama delivered an important message which was to stay in school. I think it had a huge impact on students and was very effective. We are the future of America and if we don't stay in school like Obama said America will not have a bright future.

Blake said...

Okay so I finally took the time to watch the other speaches and came up with these conclusions... Although Bush and Reagan's speeches may have bored you to tears the message was much more full. I dont care if your a Republcan, Democrat, Independent or some old person who sleeps all day and could care less. Obama's speech had too much decoration to it you might say. I feel as if the only reason he even did this is because it might distract all the attention from the real world which is going through one of the biggest recessions it's ever been through. The point is, it didn't come from his heart in my opinion. i find it hard to trust him anymore.

Now I have to agree with many that EVERYONE needs to see both parties or sides of government and make their decisions. And I hope others feel the same as well.

I believe that this President is an amazing family man and loves his wife and kids dearly and I am all for that but with all do respect I think that he needs to put that devotion and love into his country and I have not seen that yet, but i think he will. If he wants to make our futures better and easier than why is he spending TRILLIONS of dollars. In only a few months of being president he has all ready spent more money than EVERY president combined. In time our kids of today will be literally paying for this later.

Feel free to disagree.

Blake said...

I may have drifted a bit off topic but honestly that's how I feel and that's how many feel. I love this country and will stand behind it 100% And you may not believe me but I will also stand behind our president 100%. And whatever this country goes through we will get through it because we are the greatest country in the world.

God Bless America!

I think president Obama did a good job with his speech. It was a bit boring but it had its interesting parts. I think Nathan was right about the president needing to discuss the big issues in the news. I think the Republicans were rud and disrespectful to Obama by not letting there children watch his speech, it is there president because they live and America and are citizens here. I think Presidents reagan speech was very good because he talked about our Government and its history but also other Governments around the world. Which I think helped younger people understand more about the world and the USA. President Bush I think did a great job of telling just how important it is to stay in school and get good grades, and how much it can effect the future of America.

Unknown said...

I like what Blake said. I may not like the new president and how he is running the country but we have to resect him.

Obama is new at the president thing but he has been doing it for about 7 or 8 months but he hasn't run the country before. I like that he gave a speech to show that he cares about our wellbeing.

Blake said...

I thought that Obama's speech was good. I know he told us to stay in school, and stuff like that. But ecery one already tells me to stay in shool, be a good influence on people, and things like that. But I mean I'm glad he told me to do those things like kids might not listen to there teachers, and parents but when the president of hte united states tells you to do those things i think that you might want to do those things.

Vincent said...

I disagree with Blake, I believe he said all of that from his heart. Not once did he read from a script.

Also, I think it was right for Obama not to talk about political issues. The whole purpose of the speech was about kids and education. Although Obama's speech was the same speech you hear from your parents, it was good to hear it from someone who is an example of how hard work can pay off.

Vincent said...

OK, I guess everyone is asleep now. I'm a little of a night person. But anyway, overall Obama's speech was more interesting to me than Reagan's speech. It would have been nice if some students at Wakefield could have asked questions too.

I feel that maybe the speech was a little too straightforward. It's good that he wants us kids to stay in school, but I think that he told us basically what we already knew. "Stay in school." "Behave." I don't know about any of you, but I already pretty much got that memo.

I think that some parents were being unreasonable and stubborn by not letting their children watch the speech, because if Obama is smart enough to win the presidential election, he should be smart enough to tell a bunch of kids to stay in school, right?

I think that people should also have a chance to speak about their disagreements with the political leaders because it would be better for the people getting a chance to share their thoughts. Yes I think students should be exposed to all sides of the story because they could learn something new about the opposite side and change their mind about something in the politics. I think that President Obama's speech was very influencing about staying in school and I think it wasn't right to avoid the big political issues of the day. If he had notified the students then they might have tried just a little bit harder in school. Yes because the President has way more power and leadership than the teachers and might think more about hearing from someone like President Obama. All of the speeches tried to influence students to work hard and stay in school. They were different because each of the presidents used different examples to explain their reasoning. I think that President Obama is the most powerful because his speech got deeper and deeper into the main idea. Probably Ronald Regan because when he was the President it was rough times. Not really because the President has a lot of other things to worry about in the world, and like the 8th graders said " It is the same type of speech from the teachers. Stay in school, work hard, and so on."

I agree with Tyler because he wrote a lot of the same things in his blog that I did. I play a lot of sports too, so it was good when President Obama talked about joining clubs and sports.

Why?

Obama does not write the speeches, if he did they would be incomprehensible and would have alot of Uhh.... and I this...

Thats why Presidents have speech writers, think people.

Robert-
Stop calling me and Blake a shmuck.

Unknown said...

And how DO YOU KNOW that Obama has people write his speeches for him?! And are you even IN this class?

Kristin said...

I agree with Maggie and Blake about the speech not coming from his heart.

Personally, I don't think he wrote the speech at all.

Every speech he's given, he's had one of those boards that has the words of the speech on it so that he knows what to say.

As Blake said,he has yet to earn my trust.

I agree with Maggie. You should listen to the candidates speech's instead of just voting for that person because he looks better than the other person or something like that.

Unknown said...

Thanks Angela for listening to me unlike some other people I know.

Maggie.

I did not watch the speech in class but my Mom and I discussed it. She did not want me to watch it becasue she thought that it would be better if we watched together in case I had any questions. I also think that this should be a free option for everyone else to make also. I thought that what Obama said was very true. I do think that you need to stay in school that way you can get a good education and you can have a great road ahead of you.

Unknown said...

Hey Elizabeth,
So you're saying that you're mom wanted to discuss the president's speech with you? Hmm. I guess your mom thought the Obama's speech was of significant importance. I mean my mom thought it was important too, but she didn't take me out of class for it. Well that's interesting (:

Robert said...

my dad thought it was inportant to discuss to, it really didnt matter he said, but it was a good but uneeded speech

Unknown said...

This might be kind of long but please read it!!

hey this is tiye from d period if as you know from last year i like to comment on other classes. Blake is right robby when you turn 18 you can be a republican but for now be a constition or whatever. I agree with tyler that everyone ha their own opinion and no one is wrong for say what they feel. In my class Breanne said that this speech was "useless" and i completely disagree. I see where she is coming from because our parents and teachers tell us that all the time, but we never really listen. When we heard the president say it though, it kind of perked up our ears. Also, i tyhink whether we like President Obama or not we should still listen to him out of respect. Whether you're a republican or democract (it doesn't matter because we can't vote) obama is running our country for the next 4 years so deal with it.

YOu can disagree with what i have to and please do because i love to argue!! I REALLY DO!!

peace mr. veliz's b period!!
im bailey's big buddy!!

Unknown said...

Pretty good discussion. Be careful with the tone. If you call others names, you will receive a zero. That's the final warning!

Unknown said...

Also, do not post just to boost your comment numbers. No extra credit for that - it's just annoying.

I think that students should see both sides of the political world. If we only saw one side then we would think that is the right thing when it just might be the worse thing you could possibly do. I would give my opinion to the obama speech but I wasn't aloud to watch it. Also I agree with Nathan when he said that students listen more to the president or any higher athority in the political world and take it more seriously than they would to other athority figures. No offense to Mr. Veliz. :)
